2,000 Euro bribe to get shot of jobless foreigners

Evening Standard13 April 2012

A RIGHT-WING Italian council has sparked a row by offering jobless immigrants 2,000 Euros (£1,600) to leave town.

The council, which is controlled by the party Lega Nord, or Northern League, claims it is too expensive to keep unemployed foreigners.

The scheme has been proposed by the town of Spresiano in the Veneto region and councillor Manola Spolverato said: "This would save the council money as we would not have to provide any benefits to those in difficulty."

It is not the first time the party - whose votes doubled in this year's general election - has come up with extreme ideas. Its leader Umberto Bossi has called for the navy to shell boats carrying illegal immigrants towards the country.
