20 wounded as gunman opens fire

Patrick Sawer12 April 2012

A Palestinian gunman wounded at least 20 people today, five of them seriously, when he opened fire on a crowded street in Jerusalem.

Pedestrians dived for cover as the gunman launched his attack on people queuing at a bus stop. He was shot and killed by Israeli police after a short chase.

Witness Akiva Harari, 21, said the attacker had been wearing a heavy coat and used an assault rifle. "I saw him shoot two women and they fell," he said.

The shooting took place near the corner of Jaffa and King George streets, yards from where a suicide bomber blew himself up at a pizzeria in August, killing 15.
