5,000 free tickets for Venezuela concert

12 April 2012

Five thousand free tickets are to be made available to watch the rehearsals of Venezuela's crowd-pleasing young musicians next week.

Demand to see the elite performers from Venezuela's pioneering music programme, El Sistema, is such that the Southbank Centre is giving audiences the chance to see them practise.

More than 200 performers from the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra - the younger sibling of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra that has already wowed London audiences - arrive on Sunday at the end of a tour that has already stormed Vienna, Amsterdam, Madrid and Berlin where Sir Simon Rattle joined the percussion section.

In London, they are performing two full concerts as part of the Shell Classic International series as well as free performances including a piano recital and a salsa evening during the week.

Marshall Marcus, the centre's head of music, said: "Come and meet the next generation. I think people who do will be knocked out that there are even more amazing orchestras coming out of Venezuela. It is great to get the 15 to 19-year-olds on their first international tour."

Next week's programme also includes performances by young British musicians from projects inspired by the Venezuelan system.
