6.25m weekday passengers

13 April 2012
  • There are almost 8,000 buses in the capital's bus fleet, operating on 700 routes. Weekday passenger numbers are now 6.25 million - up from around four million when Ken Livingstone was elected in 2000.
  • This adds up to about 1.7 billion journeys a year. The target by 2010 is in excess of 1.9 billion journeys.
  • Night bus use has risen sharply with 27 million night journeys made in 2003/4 - up 82 per cent on 2000/01.
  • In the last financial year, 757,512 £100 penalty tickets were issued for entering bus lanes. Some 307,706 were issued for bus lanes on TfL's "red route" network - the main roads and dual carriageways across London.
  • The remainder were issued for breaches on roads run by borough councils. Newham was the most prolific with 70,437, Lambeth second with 60,770.
  • This time last year, 14 of the 33 boroughs did not enforce - or have many - bus lanes.
  • 1,614 motorists appealed against their penalty for entering a bus lane in the last financial year.
