72 held in pre-Carnival purge

Police have arrested 72 people as part of a zero tolerance scheme in preparation for this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival.

Officers aimed to rid the area of petty criminals before the event: the two-week operation has seen arrests for a range of offences, including drug possession, theft, fraud, and motor vehicle offences.

Officers hope that by taking a firm stance on minor offences, they will show that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated.

They focused on crime spots and Tube stations, targeted known criminals, and closed crack houses.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Trotter said: "This preemptive action will ensure that a minority don't spoil Carnival for everyone else."
