75% of public back Olympic bid

Three-quarters of the public want the Government to support a London bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, an opinion poll commissioned by ministers has found.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell will unveil the findings of the ICM survey before a Cabinet decision on whether to back a bid on 30 January.

The telephone survey of 3,000 adults shows 75 per cent of people agreeing that a British bid should go ahead. The finding is even more overwhelming than the Evening Standard's poll, carried out by YouGov, which found two out of three Londoners in favour of a bid.
