750,000 Britons allergic to gluten

Thousands of Britons could be unaware they have an intolerance to gluten in wheat, barley and rye products, campaigners said today.

Coeliac disease is estimated to affect up to 750,000 people.

But Coeliac UK said fewer than 250,000 people had been diagnosed and one in 100 Britons may be unaware they were at risk. Undetected, the condition can lead to osteoporosis, anaemia and infertility, or stunted growth in children.
