Abu Hamza’s son gets 12 months for riot violence

12 April 2012

The son of hate preacher Abu Hamza was today sentenced to 12 months youth detention for attacking police officers at a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy.

Yasser Kamel, 20, was caught on camera throwing four missiles at officers during a protest against Israeli military action in Gaza on January 10 last year.

Isleworth crown court heard how the student disguised his face with a scarf and used a stolen police riot shield for protection. A total of £50,000 of damage was caused to shops and cafés in Kensington High Street during the rioting.

Kemal arrived at about 4.45pm as police moved to quell the disorder. Some protesters were dismantling metal barriers and using them to charge at the line of riot officers.

He got involved in some of the clashes, and even changed clothes half way through the rioting. He was also caught being shown how to use the riot shield by another demonstrator.

One riot officer suffered a badly broken jaw after a metal rivet, used to clip fences together, was thrown andsmashed through the protective visor on his helmet.

The policeman was seen on video rolling on the road in pain while fellow fellow officers rushed to his aid - although the Crown says the rivet was not thrown by Kamel.

Police picked up Kamel shortly before 8pm that evening, and a video of him being arrested was shown to Isleworth crown court.

Kamel, who was 18 at the time of the offence, previously pleaded guilty to one count of violent disorder.
