'Abuse victim’ can sue school for £5m

Miranda Bryant12 April 2012

A man was given the go-ahead today to pursue a £5 million legal action against a Jesuit-run school where he claims he was sexually abused as a child.

Former City lawyer Patrick Raggett, 52, of west London, claims he was subjected to four years of "insidious" abuse by a teacher at Preston Catholic College in Lancashire.

He alleges Father Michael Spencer, who died in 2000 aged 76, measured him while he was naked "to chart his growth", photographed him and touched him inappropriately.

Governors of the college, which closed in 1978, deny liability. Today the Court of Appeal upheld an earlier High Court ruling that the case could go to a full hearing.
