Albert Bridge night work is ruled out

12 April 2012

The politician responsible for overseeing the 18-month closure of Albert Bridge for repairs today rejected calls from some residents for work to be carried out overnight.

Nick Paget-Brown, a senior Tory on Kensington and Chelsea council, said: "If we move to 24-hour working, we are going to upset as many people as we satisfy."

The Conservative-run council does not allow work to continue after 6.30pm in line with a borough-wide ban on night-time construction noise.

The Victorian Grade-II listed bridge closed in February and will not reopen until August next year.

Transport for London, which is funding the bulk of the £7.2 million project, has backed demands for work to be speeded up to minimise disruption to motorists.
