Album picture of 'the perfect family killed by father'

Tragic: Richard and Clair with Aaron and Ben. They were found in the bedroom
12 April 2012

This is the first picture of the family of four found dead at their home.

Clair Smith, 36, and her sons Ben, nine, and Aaron, one, are thought to have been attacked by the boys' father Richard Smith, 37, who died of smoke inhalation after killing them.

The bodies were found at their home in Sheridan Way, Pudsey, near Leeds, after concerned relatives raised the alarm.

Today, Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor, of West Yorkshire Police, said Mrs Smith and baby Aaron died from single stab wounds to the chest. Ben also suffered a stab wound to the chest area but died as a result of suffocation.

Mr Taylor said: "Ben's advent calendar is not opened on the Saturday so we believe something happened overnight Friday or the early hours of Saturday but, of course, if anybody else has any information that would contradict that we would very much want to hear from them."

Asked about the causes of the incident, Mr Taylor said: "That will be the thrust of the ongoing investigations." He said the bodies were found in the main bedroom, which was fire damaged.

Relatives described the Smiths as a "perfect family".

Friends said Mr Smith worked for a shopfitting firm as a designer.
