Almshouses project is back to the future

12 April 2012

The first 21st century almshouses for elderly people could be built in London.

Plans for "state-of-the-art" purpose-built flats for pensioners on low incomes in Belmont Park, Lewisham, are being considered by the local council.

The new, larger homes will replace two separate groups of almshouses in the borough which have been deemed too old to be suitable.

The apartments are being developed by the Merchant Taylors Company which acts on behalf of various almshouse charities.

A Grade II-listed building dating back to 1824 in Lee High Road, which used to be home to almshouses, is being sold to fund the development. The proviso is that it is sympathetically modernised and continues to provide housing in the future.

Christopher Boone's almshouses, in Belmont Park, are to be demolished to make room for the new flats.
