Andy Burnham wins place on Labour leadership ballot paper

Andy Burnham is hoping to get on the ballot before the deadline

Labour leadership candidate Andy Burnham today secured the 33 nominations from fellow MPs needed to secure a place on the ballot paper, just two hours before the lunchtime deadline.

The shadow health secretary joined David Miliband, Ed Miliband and Ed Balls to make the battle to succeed Gordon Brown into a four-horse race.

He reached the nominations threshold shortly after backbencher John McDonnell withdrew from the contest in the hope of clearing the way for Diane Abbott to run as the voice of the left.
