Anti-ageing pill ‘trebles chances of pregnancy’

12 April 2012

An anti-ageing pill available over the counter could triple the likelihood of women conceiving, scientists said today.

The supplement, called DHEA, is a natural occurring steroid. Professor Adrian Shulman, of Tel Aviv University found that women undergoing fertility treatment who also took DHEA were three times more likely to conceive than those being treated without it.

The results were published in AYALA, the journal of the Israeli Fertility Association.

Experts warned that more research is needed before the supplement could be recommended as an aid to getting pregnant.

Dr Jane Stewart of the Newcastle Fertility Centre said: "There has been a lot of anecdotal evidence about DHEA. This is a interesting research, but it is too early to be recommending this to women. However, it is a very interesting area and one we need to try and understand."
