Armed police shoot dead man in Kent

12 April 2012

Armed police today shot and killed a person in a quiet market town, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

The shooting took place in the early hours of this morning in Sevenoaks, Kent, and part of the town centre is understood to be sealed off.

An IPCC spokesman said: "I can confirm that in the early hours of this morning Kent Police fatally shot a person.

"This has been referred to the IPCC which has a team of investigators now at the scene."

Part of the town centre, including the bus station, was sealed off with police tape.

Michelle Harriot, manager of Loch Fyne Fish Restaurant in the High Street, said police officers were taking statements around the bus station.

She said: "I saw three or four police officers on the streets this morning and a couple of vans but the only thing I have really heard is from the radio.

"This is peak commuter time and everyone is just carrying on as normal. I don't think anyone's really aware of what's happened."

A Caffe Nero employee nearer to the scene of the incident said he arrived at work just after six and police were already there.

"There are lots of police around but they haven't really told us what happened," he said.
