'Assaulted' MP faces a showdown

Ben Leapman12 April 2012

Rebel MP Paul Marsden faces a showdown with the Government Chief Whip today over his claim that he was assaulted by colleagues.

Mr Marsden, who opposes the war in Afghanistan, said he was attacked late at night in a Commons bar by three fellow Labour MPs who accused him of being a traitor.

He has been summoned to meet Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong. However, he has threatened to stay away unless he receives a reply to a letter which he sent to Tony Blair about the incident.

A Labour Par ty spokesman confirmed that Mr Marsden was due to see Ms Armstrong, but insisted that he was "free to express his views".

Mr Marsden claims the attack, in which he was "pinned against the wall", was led by Labour whip Gerry Sutcliffe.

Labour MPs Lindsay Hoyle and Ivan Henderson were said to have sworn at Mr Marsden.
