Baby girl's body in airport bin

13 April 2012

The body of a baby girl has been found dumped in a waste bin at Heathrow Airport, police said.

Officers were called by staff at a hygiene waste company in Park Royal, west London, who had discovered the remains of the baby in a clinical waste container.

The bin is believed to have been earlier collected from Heathrow Airport.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police are attempting to trace the mother of the baby, who could have been flying out of the country when she abandoned the little girl, and are investigating the scene at the airport.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said police were called on Monday by staff at the hygiene company.

"A member of staff had found the body of a baby girl in a bin of clinical waste.

"We await a post-mortem to establish the age and ethnicity of the baby," she said.

The post-mortem examination is due to take place on Wednesday at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

The police spokeswoman added: "The death is being treated as suspicious at this early stage."

Scotland Yard's Specialist Crime Directorate Child Protection Team is leading the investigation into the death of the baby.
