Bad luck Arctic Monkeys, turns out Gordon Brown really likes listening to the Bee Gees instead

12 April 2012

Like an embarrassing dad, he once famously claimed to be a fan of youthful rock band Arctic Monkeys.

But now it seems as if Gordon Brown's musical tastes run more to disco and flares than loud rock and guitars.

According to Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees the Prime Minister is a huge fan of the 70s group and their unique brand of falsetto disco pop - and listens to their music every day.

He said the Prime Minister described the Bee Gees' songs as "absolutely timeless", but did not reveal which of their many hits were his favourites.

"I was with him at a dinner recently," said Gibb and claimed that the PM is a fan of the Bee Gees' because their music "talks about human relationships and experience rather than specific events and reaches out across the decades".

Tragedy: Gordon Brown is a secret fan of the Bee Gees, it has been revealed

"He listens to our music every day. Gordon likes our music and I like Gordon," added Gibb.

Many might find the thought of Gordon Brown dressed in a tight-fitting white nylon suit throwing John Travolta-like dance moves in the privacy of 10 Downing Street mildly disconcerting.

But at least it rings a little truer than the last time the PM's musical tastes were discussed in the media.

In 2006, in an interview with New Woman magazine, the then-Chancellor said that listening Arctic Monkeys 'really wakes you up in the mornings' and that he loved Pop Idol.

Widespread derision followed and Brown was quick to clarify.

Asked if he really liked the band, the Chancellor responded: 'You've got to laugh, because actually I was asked did I prefer Arctic Monkeys to James Blunt (of 'You're Beautiful' fame), and I think I said I'd prefer Coldplay.

"But I made a joke that Arctic Monkeys would certainly wake you up in the morning. So, I mean, I've heard Arctic Monkeys and they're very loud."

When pressed on his favourite track Brown could only say: "Well, I mean, I have got them. But they are very loud."

A Downing Street spokesman, undoubtedly painfully aware of the Arctic Monkey's debacle, declined to confirm whether the PM was in fact a closet Bee Gees fan.

"The Prime Minister listens to a wide range of music," was all his spokesman would say when pressed on the subject.
