Baghdad bomb kills 21 at police office

12 April 2012

A suicide bomber today killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more in an attack on the interior ministry offices in Baghdad.

The bomber had tried to drive a delivery lorry past a checkpoint and the 10ft high, seven-ton blast walls protecting the forensic evidence HQ.

Yesterday more than 30 people died when several landmark hotels in the city used by Westerners were hit in attacks blamed on al Qaeda.

The bombings against prominent and heavily-fortified targets have dealt another blow to an Iraqi government struggling to answer for lapses that have seen a series of massive attacks since August.

Rescue crews were this afternoon still combing through the rubble of the interior ministry.
