Bank calls that make you see red

Consumers who fail to pay their credit card bills on time are to receive automated phone calls from their bank demanding money.

A new computer system will allow banks to ring thousands at risk of falling into debt. When the customer picks up their receiver, a computerised voice will tell them their bank is on the line.

After receiving security information, the message will tell them their account is overdue and payment is needed immediately. Banks believe the system could stop people from going into the red without realising it.

Consumer groups say it is corporate harassment. They fear that banks may generate reminder calls before balances are actually overdue.
