Barschak guilty over art attack

13 April 2012

Self-styled Comedy Terrorist Aaron Barschak, from north London, has been found guilty of criminal damage for throwing red paint over Turner Prize nominee Jake Chapman and one of his artworks.

District Judge Brian Loosley, sitting at Oxford Magistrates Court, also called the 37-year-old a publicity seeker.

Barschak, who gatecrashed Prince William's 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle earlier this year, denied the charge, claiming he was creating a work of art with the stunt at the Modern Art Oxford gallery.

Mr Loosley warned Barschak, of Golders Green, he could face jail for the paint attack.

He told the stand-up comedian: "This is a serious offence of wanton destruction of a work of art and I will be considering a custodial sentence.

"I'm not prepared to tolerate damage to works of art in Oxford or anywhere else for that matter.

"I feel that this was a publicity stunt and not a genuine attempt by you to create a work of art.

"In the course of your publicity stunt, you caused substantial damage to the painting, to the gallery, the floor and the walls.

"I may well want to pass a custodial sentence to reflect my displeasure."

The judge adjourned sentencing until November 24 for pre-sentence reports. Barschak was also ordered to pay £300 prosecution costs.
