Beckhams waxworks smashed

A controversial nativity scene featuring waxworks of David and Victoria Beckham has been wrecked by an attacker.

The couple's figures were said to have been 'extensively damaged' when a man burst through a cordon at Madame Tussauds.

Staff at the Central London attraction were stunned as he repeatedly smashed his fists into the faces of the wax models.

Posh and Becks appear in the scene as Mary and Joseph with models of George Bush, Graham Norton, Hugh Grant and others taking the roles of wise men and shepherds.

Critics have attacked Madame Tussauds, one of Britain's most popular tourist attractions, for

commercialising the birth of Jesus. It is not known why the man, who fled the scene, carried out the attack.

Most of the damage caused was to the soft wax on Victoria Beckham's face, but David Beckham was also badly damaged.

A spokesman for Madame Tussauds said: 'I can confirm there was an incident on Sunday morning. A visitor launched an unprovoked attack.

'Two figures were extensively damaged - Posh and Becks. They are being repaired and will be put back when they are finished.

'The display is closed and will remain so for the forseeable future.' She added that the repairs were unlikely to be completed before the display was due to close on January 3.

The vandal, who is believed to be in his 20s, waited patiently behind other visitors until he got close enough to the models to lash out.

The attack came days after church leaders described the celebrity nativity scene as 'tasteless'.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, called the scene 'disrespectful', while the Vatican said it was 'certainly in very poor taste.'

It was created after 300 visitors to the London attraction were asked in October which celebrities they would like to see take the roles.
