Best sellers with beans at Sainsbury

13 April 2012

SUPERMARKETS group Sainsbury is launching a huge range of books in a drive to win sales from WH Smith and Waterstone's.

The market is already fiercely competitive, but Sainsbury is kicking off with cut-price offerings, including David Beckham's 'My Side' for £10 (£8.99 off the recommended price).

More than 1,000 titles go on sale in its top 85 stores next week - including children's books, gardening titles and the latest novels and non-fiction.

This will eventually be rolled out to 350 shops alongside new homeware ranges. Supermarkets already sell £100m of books each year - 5% of the £2bn market - but most focus on the top 20 titles.

Chief executive Sir Peter Davis, who is under pressure to stop losing market share to Tesco and Asda, said: 'We want to give our customers everything for their lifestyles under one roof.

'We know they value books and want to be able to buy them more conveniently while doing their regular grocery shopping.'
