Bidder No 4 in move for Safeway

The £3 billion scramble to buy the Safeway supermarket chain intensified today as a fourth bidder said it was considering making an offer.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, the aggressive American investment group which owned Safeway in the mid-Eighties, confirmed it was a contender.

A friendly bid last week from Northern grocery chain Morrison sparked a frenzy of interest, with both Sainsbury and Asda, which is owned by US Wal-Mart group, expressing a formal interest. The battle has triggered monopolies concerns.
