Biggs rebuffed in sentence appeal

Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has failed in a legal challenge to have his 30-year prison sentence reduced, the Criminal Cases Review Commission said today.

Biggs, 72, had asked the organisation to refer his case to the Court of Appeal, arguing the sentence was inappropriate and unnecessary.

"We have now made a final decision and will not be referring this case to the Court of Appeal," said a spokesman for the independent CCRC.

"We are unable to give our reasons for this decision."
