Billingsgate fish porters hand in petition

12 April 2012

Fish porters fighting to save Billingsgate Market will today hand in a petition with 20,000 signatures.

The workers warned that plans to revoke bye-laws governing the running of the market threaten its future and will lead to job losses.

Porters, who are members of the Unite union, will hand the petition to London's Guildhall.

Steve Hart, the union's London regional secretary, said: "It is now time for the City of London Corporation to come to their senses and abandon the pointless changes being planned for Billingsgate Market.

"The fish porters have the support of over 20,000 Londoners in their opposition to the fundamental changes being proposed."
