Billingsgate fish porters protest over threat to jobs

Fish porters at historic Billingsgate Market staged a demonstration today over fears new working conditions will destroy their traditional trade.

The City of London Corporation, which owns the market, wants to deregulate the centuries-old trade. The porters worry this could see their specialist knowledge of transporting fish devalued and cheaper, unskilled workers brought in. About 50 porters gathered to protest.
