SCOTLAND exported more than a billion bottles of whisky last year, for the first time ever. Volumes rose 2.4% to beat the billion mark by 13m bottles.

The previous record was 1997, 11m bottles short of the billion mark. The value of exports last year outstripped the growth in volumes, rising 6.4% to £2.3bn.

France became the largest importer, taking 13% more bottles at 153m bottles. Spain was in second place but its demand fell 13% to 137m bottles. The US was in third place after an 8% fall to 110m bottles.
