Billy Connolly always keen to grab the limelight, turned all the attention on to his feet when he arrived at the premiere of his latest film in a pair of show-stopping shoes.

For the first screening of The Man Who Sued God, Connolly, 60, was wearing bright red wooden-soled footwear - done up by two buckles, around which several inches of foot were visible - hardly the choice you would expect from a proud Glaswegian.

In fact, they would have looked more appropriate on his wife Pamela Stephenson. The rest of Connolly's outfit, a dark suit and black shirt with printed red flowers, was rather more conventional.

In the film, which also stars Judy Davis, Connolly plays Steve Myers, a fedup lawyer who turns to fishing. He decides to sue God after his boat is destroyed by lightning and his insurance company refuses to pay, declaring it an "act of God".

With God unable to attend in person, it is up to the Church to defend the case which goes to court and causes worldwide interest. The film has already attracted good reviews, with one critic describing it as "the Big Yin at his best".

It was shot in Australia, his wife's home country. Although having initial doubts about the script, Connolly decided to get involved because he liked his character so much.

He said: "I loved the title of the film and the basic premise, but I did feel there were bits about the script that were too cutesy-pie for me - a bit too nice guy and comfy."
