Biofuel driver held on terror charges in India

Arrest: Andy Pag is being held in India
12 April 2012

An environmental campaigner arrested in India while attempting to drive around the world in a bus powered by vegetable oil said today he was terrified by the prospect of prison.

Andy Pag, 35, from Croydon, modified an old school bus so it could run on the oil thrown out by caterers before leaving London last September.

He was held on 11 January in Rajasthan on suspicion of terrorism after police found he owned a satellite phone but did not have a permit. Mr Pag said: "I'm very sorry and embarrassed I appear to have broken the rules. I've used this phone in over 30 countries and I've never been asked for a permit before."

Mr Pag is due back in court in a week and said jail would be a harsh punishment for a bureaucratic mistake.
