Bomb blast rocks Spanish resort

12 April 2012

An explosion shook a Spanish beach resort today after a telephone warning of a car bomb was made in the name of Basque separatists, Eta.

It was not immediately clear whether the explosion in Torrevieja, south of Alicante on Spain's south-eastern coast, was caused by the bomb or whether it was a controlled blast by police. Earlier this week a bomb exploded in the nearby town of Santa Pola killing two people, including a six-year-old girl.

The terror group has killed 800 people since 1968 in a bloody campaign for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and south-western France.
