'Bomb' found in diner arson attack

12 April 2012

A suspected explosive device has been discovered by fire investigators after they were called to a possible arson at a diner.

Police cordoned off the area in Kingsway, Hove, East Sussex, and evacuated nearby buildings after the package was found at around 11.20am.

A bomb disposal team was sent to deal safely with the suspected improvised explosive device (IED) as motorists were advised to stay away from the area.

Officers from Sussex Police said they were keeping an open mind about a possible motive but they believe it was not a random attack.

Emergency teams were called after a lit item was thrown through the glass window of the front door of the diner.

People living in a flat above heard the sound of breaking glass and discovered the fire.

Detective Inspector John Wallace said: "Sussex Police is working with the explosive ordnance disposal team and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to resolve the situation as swiftly as possible and to minimise any disruption to the local community.

"We are keeping an open mind as to the motives of anyone involved and do not believe this is a random attack on the premises. I am appealing to anyone with information to come forward."

A cordon was in place from St Leonard's Road to Roman Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070 999.
