Boris Johnson sets out plan to make London a cycle city

12 April 2012

Boris Johnson set out his 10-point pledge to London cyclists today in a bid to get thousands more Londoners on their bikes.

As well as his pledge, right, he announced the launch of the first two cycle superhighways — from Merton to the City and Barking to Tower Gateway — this summer, and kicked off a programme of events including the London Cycle Challenge and the launch of the Paris-style bike hire scheme.

The Mayor said: "I am determined to transform London into a city that cycles and where hundreds of thousands enjoy the elixir of using two wheels to get around the capital.

"There's huge potential to increase the number of journeys that Londoners make by bike and today we're setting out exactly how we're going to do that."

Transport for London will spend £116 million to promote cycling this year.

Tom Bogdanovic of the London Cycling Campaign said: "It's excellent to have a vision in which cycling is promised and facilitated, but getting it done is another. We'd very much like to see a clear commitment to funding and implementation down the road."
