Bottom line on Robbie's antics

Ed Harris12 April 2012

He seems to be attempting, in his latest incarnation, to style himself on Frank Sinatra. But it is difficult to imagine Ol' Blue Eyes dropping his trousers on stage - as Robbie Williams did on tour in the Far East.

Williams, who this month performed a sell-out tribute to the Sinatra era at the Royal Albert Hall, bared his behind at a concert in Bangkok and bragged to his bemused fans that he had done the same thing in Singapore and been fined £4,000 (although Singapore police disputed his version).

Is the singer returning to the kind of bad-boy behaviour once synonymous with his name?

Certainly his crude antics at Taipei airport in Taiwan, where he is due to perform tonight, brought back memories of some of his earlier misdemeanours after his traumatic exit from Take That.

Williams, 26, refused to answer journalists' questions while waiting to get his passport stamped, and reportedly swore when referring to Taiwan.

He told reporters who objected to his language: "I didn't insult your country, I will insult you." What the actual expletives were has not been recorded.

What came next was a familiar scene: Williams, dressed in jeans, blue T-shirt and a broad-brimmed canvas hat, running through the airport concourse, pursued by gasping, plodding photographers.

Although it is tempting to assume that Williams had drunk deeply from the duty-free on the flight, he has recently claimed that he is staying off alcohol and has been in rehab.

So we must, on this occasion, give him the benefit of the doubt.
