Boy, 10, is killed by coach near Albert Hall before Clapton gig

Investigation: Police teams at the Albert Hall

A 10-year-old boy has died after being hit by a coach outside the Royal Albert Hall.

The victim, who has not been named, was with his mother when he was struck by the vehicle as it turned into a side road.

The accident happened at just after 5pm yesterday. Paramedics fought to save the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is thought to have been walking past the Albert Hall where roadies were preparing for an Eric Clapton concert last night.

Adrian Mahieu, of Kensington and Chelsea Cyclists, was passing just moments after the coach had hit the child. He said: "There was woman standing to the right of the coach screaming. I saw two police officers talk to her and she absolutely lost it.

"She was totally distraught and was physically fighting them when they tried to take her to the ambulance.
"It was the anguished scream of a mother." Kensington Gore was closed for several hours as police accident investigators worked in a blue forensic tent.

Scotland Yard said its road death investigation unit was investigating the incident. They were gathering evidence at the rear of a blue vehicle, registered to a Peckham firm, Excalibur coaches. There had been no arrests.

A spokesman for Excalibur refused to comment this morning. The Royal Albert Hall said the Excalibur coach was not carrying passengers for its Eric Clapton concert.

Another white coach, marked Seaward, was parked next the Excalibur bus.
A roadie for the Eric Clapton concert at the Royal Albert Hall last night said: "There are big problems with the number of coaches stopping here for people jump out quickly and take photographs of the building.

"The turns are quite tight so it takes a lot of manoeuvring for the coaches to get out."
A post mortem is due to be carried out.
