Breast surgeon 'set patient on fire'

12 April 2012

A Harley Street surgeon tried to cover up a medical accident in which she set a patient on fire during a breast enhancement operation, a tribunal heard today.

It was told that Dr Christina Brunner, 45, set the operating table and surgical tapes around the patient ablaze when medical equipment and anaesthetic gases came into contact. Although the fire was quickly put out, the woman was said to have suffered a blister the size of a 50p coin.

Dr Brunner, on her first day at the London Welbeck Hospital, was said to have told nurses to say the injury was caused by an allergic reaction.

The German-born consultant, employed by Harley Medical Group for the £4,275 operation, is accused of dishonesty and misleading health bosses. The General Medical Council hearing continues.
