British Gas attacked after 'threat letters'

Standard Reporter12 April 2012

British Gas came under attack today after claims that it had threatened to force entry into customers' homes to read their gas meters although the company itself had failed to keep the appointment.

British Gas was also leaving intimidating letters with customers who had warned the company they could not be at home when the meter reader intended to call, the Consumers' Association said.

An article by the association's Which? magazine called on British Gas to improve communication with its customers.

It said it had evidence from several upset customers who were threatened with forced entry.

Gas companies are required by law to check meters once every two years for safety reasons.

Which? magazine said British Gas was failing to give its customers enough advance warning before issuing warrants.

Which? editor Helen Parker said: "It needs to improve communication with its customers and arrange a mutually convenient appointment - and stick to it."

But British Gas said such incidents were rare. Spokesman Richard Dymond said: "It's very rare that a meter goes unread for two years and we are unable to see a customer.

"The warning is used only as a last resort."
