He is the 14th British soldier to be killed in action since operations in Afghanistan began in November 2001 and the sixth to die this month.

Lance Corporal Hetherington was shot during an assault on his platoon house in Musa Qaleh, in northern Helmand in the early hours.

The MoD said he was fatally injured in a confrontation with rebels at about 5am local time. The Helmand province, in southern Afghanistan, has seen repeated firefights between Nato forces and Taliban insurgents.
