Briton faces jail for role in Thailand riots

Struggle: Briton Jeff Savage lies in chains after being brought to court in Bangkok
Duncan Smith12 April 2012

A former Buckingham Palace porter arrested in Thailand for joining violent street protests appeared in a Bangkok court in chains today.

Jeff Savage, 49, from Kent, was charged with breaching emergency law, which could mean two years in jail. The Thai authorities have accused him of inciting protesters to set fire to a shopping mall.

Savage was apparently seen on a video clip saying: "We're going to loot everything, gold, watches, everything, and then we're gonna burn it to the ground." He was tranferred to the court in chains and surrounded by police officers.

Savage used to work as a general porter at Buckingham Palace. His duties included preparing state rooms for official functions, such as banquets and investitures.
