Britons stabbed by outback hitchhiker

12 April 2012

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a knife attack on a British tourist and his US girlfriend in Australia.

The stabbing, by a hitchhiker, had echoes of last year's shooting and abduction of Briton Peter Falconio.

The 23-year-old British man was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his American female companion when they picked up the hitchhiker in Alice Springs yesterday.

While they were driving, the hitchhiker stabbed the man in the back. The unnamed Briton is in a satisfactory condition in hospital.

Police said there was no connection between the attack and Mr Falconio's disappearance.
