A budget airline is to open a new UK base, creating 250 jobs, it was announced today.

The low-fare carrier, which already flies from six UK airports, will use East Midlands to offer flights to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Corfu, Dalaman in Turkey, Heraklion in Greece, Paphos in Cyprus and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

Flight prices, available from today, will start at £59.99 one-way including taxes.

Jet2.com managing director Ian Doubtfire said: "We see the region as having huge growth potential for our leisure business and the exceptional transport links to the airport allows us to extend our catchment area further into Derby, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and surrounding areas."

East Midlands Airport chief executive Penny Coates said: "This is extremely encouraging news for the airport and the region as a whole."
