'Butcher' lawyer may face charges

A lawyer who made up to £2million representing alleged victims of gynaecologist Rodney Ledward may face criminal charges after being accused of exaggerating their claims.

Solicitor Jane Loveday, who represented 59 women in a court action which collapsed last month, is said to have added a rape allegation to one complaint and left another woman on the claims list after being asked to take her off.

The women sought damages from three health authorities which employed Ledward, dubbed "the Butcher" after being struck off in 1998.

Judge Mrs Justice Hallet described Mrs Loveday as "unfit" to handle litigation cases.
