Camden fears an 'invasion of the car space snatchers'

12 April 2012

Camden will be turned into a "car park" by Westminster council's proposals, it was claimed today.

Residents warned that people will simply park just over the borough border in places such as Holborn and Fitzrovia and walk to the West End. Camden parking bays are generally free in the evenings and weekends.

Labour councillor Sue Vincent, who represents Holborn and Covent Garden, said: "It's going to put huge pressure on available parking. We have heard nothing from Westminster. I am furious."

Councillor Awale Olad added: "This is going to be a complete invasion and we will not tolerate it." Transport expert Tony Travers, who lives in the area, warned: "Camden faces the challenge that if they do not follow suit, then that area could become the place for free parking in the evenings and weekends."

Resident Sergio Nieves, 24, an art student, said: "People will start parking in surrounding roads, so it will become impossible to find a space."

Hemina Patel, 32, a project manager, said: "When they bring in those charges around the West End, people will just start parking around here... they will be fighting for parking spaces."
