Cameron's latest stunt ... working as a teaching assistant in a comprehensive

12 April 2012

David Cameron has spent two days as a teaching assistant in a comprehensive school, it was revealed today.

The Tory leader travelled to Humberside to find out for himself the problems facing teachers in secondary schools by taking part in lessons.

He kept his visit secret but took with him a cameraman to record his experiences on his website, WebCameron.

A spokesman said his aim was to experience what it was like to teach a class full of teenagers, as well as hear what teachers say about testing, government bureaucracy and funding.

The Conservative leader started his experience realising noone knew who he was. "The day starts badly, for me at least. Helping register a class of 13 year olds, no-one – and I mean literally no one – has even heard of the Conservative Party," he said.

Mr Cameron answered questions from a classroom about politics. Unfortunately when asked how many MPs there were in the House of Parliaments he said 650. There are actually 646. Still at least he knew the Liberal Democrats colour was yellow.

He also took two English classes. "Remembering how to analyse and write about poems, without getting my metaphors confused with personification, oxymorons or enjoinment is one of the main challenges," he said.

Later on Mr Cameron spoke to students about their experiences of crime and explained the Conservatives environmental policy.

Mr Cameron sees his target key voters as "the staff room of an ordinary primary school" - symbolising his commitment to public services.

He wants to convince voters that he is serious about tackling deep-rooted problems in public services and society, issues where the Conservatives were traditionally seen as weak.

Last week, he lived for two days with a Muslim family in Birmingham.
