Car census slows A4 to a crawl

Thousands of drivers faced serious delays on the A4 out of London today after motorists were stopped for a census - into how to improve travel.

Police and researchers cordoned off one lane of the road at Chiswick, forcing traffic to a crawl. The survey, commissioned by the Mayor's Transport for London office, aims to discover information about travel patterns, which will be used to plan transport needs for the next decade.

Today one driver said it was "ludicrous" to cause such a hold-up during rush hour.
