Catholic prayer protest by candlelight

12 April 2012

Hundreds of parents at one of London's best Catholic state schools will stand outside and pray by candlelight in an extraordinary protest against the school's management.

Today's prayer vigil has been organised by a group of parents who fear the "Catholic ethos" of the school is being watered down.

They also argue that parents of current pupils are under represented on the school's governing body.

It comes after a long row between the diocese of Westminster and the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in Holland Park over the way the school selects its pupils.

The row broke out when church leaders reported the school to the admissions watchdog, claiming its entry rules penalised the less devout. The school had been asking prospective parents for proof they were involved in the Catholic Church, above and beyond going to Mass.
