An American woman who underwent a face transplant after she was mauled by a chimpanzee is back in hospital because her body is rejecting the tissue.

Charla Nash, 61, took part in a military-funded experiment to see if she can be weaned off anti-rejection drugs she had been taking since the operation in 2011.

But Ms Nash said doctors had decided to end the treatment after they discovered her body was rejecting the transplant.

She told The Associated Press she would appreciate any prayers as medics are set to put her back on her original medication in the hope of reversing the rejection.

In 2009, Ms Nash was viciously attacked by her neighbour’s chimpanzee, Travis, as she tried to lure the pet back into his home.

She was left with no eyes, mouth, eyelids and nose after the attack in Stamford, Connecticut.

The chimpanzee was shot dead by police.
