Couple in 'Thelma and Louise' cliff dive

12 April 2012

A couple died after apparently driving their car at speed off a cliff on the Isle of Wight in a "Thelma and Louise" suicide.

Onlookers at a beauty spot told how the male driver of the blue Renault suddenly accelerated from a car park and "gunned it for the cliff edge".

It plummeted 350 feet down the chalk cliffs at Culver Down, smashing into rocks on the beach below.

The force of the impact threw the doors of the vehicle wide open and the bodies of the man and woman were flung clear. The couple, who are understood to be local, died instantly.
