Customs seize £7.2m cocaine haul

13 April 2012

Customs officers today hailed the ferry port seizure of cocaine with an estimated street value of £7.2 million.

Officials discovered 120 kilos of the Class A drug in a lorry at Dover's Eastern Docks in Kent on Monday.

The find is the biggest at Dover this year and was hailed as a major victory in the fight against drugs.

Graham Hooker, Head of Detection for Customs at Dover, said: "Customs officers have prevented a significant quantity of cocaine from reaching the streets of Northern England.

"This seizure underlines our commitment to reduce the availability of Class A drugs in the UK."

The cocaine was found packed into boxes hidden under a load of tiles and shop fittings in the lorry which arrived on a ferry from Dunkerque, France.

Michael Briggs, 52, of Common Road, Low Moor, Bradford, West Yorkshire, has been charged with attempting to smuggle cocaine into the UK and bailed to appear before Dover Magistrates on October 18.
