Customs staff chained to rail line

12 April 2012

EUROSTAR passengers were delayed today when French customs workers chained themselves to the track at Calais as part of a strike over pay.

One early morning Eurostar to from London Waterloo to Paris was halted for an hour as French police tried to persuade four workers to come off the track.

The strike within Les Douanes has affected trains leaving Paris all week, where industrial action over pay and conditions has centred, but today hit the Eurostar station at Calais. Eurotunnel services, which operate on a different line, were not affected.

Eurostar warned passengers may face further delays between London and Paris throughout the weekend as industrial action by French customs officials continued.

A spokesman said: 'Passengers travelling between London and Paris may experience minor delays. However, we expect to run a full timetable.'
